When checking an alloy tank recently, Pete G noticed how the alloy had reacted with the stainless steel bands he was using, clearly seen in the images below. This was a very low level of corrosion, but could have proved extremely dangerous had it gone unnoticed.
It’s called Galvanic Corrosion (more here and here) , and can happen when two different metals are bridged by an electrolyte such as seawater.
Pete wanted to share these photos with members as a warning. He’ll be getting hold of some non-metallic straps for his stage cylinder.
